From David Siegel:
"There were three points I wanted to adress in developing this line of furniture." |
Renewable materials....
"After 15 years of building things I have become aware of just where hardwoods come from and what impact that harvesting has on the local and global environment. But I also have always been fascinated by new materials and how they lend themselves to be used in innovative ways. For me, one of the most exciting properties of bamboo plywood is that it has an 1/8th-inch veneer that allows for texturing of the surface, something not possible with other kinds of ply material." |
Textured surfaces....
"One of our most important senses is our sense of tuouch, and yet we have settled for sterile, angular, clunky, and even dangerous design. Thankfully, recent years have seen more curvacious, smooth, streamlined, and pleasing design emerging, as well as playful experimentation with color options. The next phase, begining to emerge already, will be an exploration of fun and interesting surface textures on products. Some will refer and connect us back to nature. I've tried to do that with my textures on these pieces. I refer to the point in nature where randomness and pattern converge." |
Bright colors....
"I wanted to show that high-end, quality furniture can also be colorful, and with the translucency of the colored laquer, the grain pattern of the bamboo still shows through. When combined with the texture, this leads to a rich visual experience. I also wanted quality furniture that could be kids' furniture or playful adult furniture. This way:
there's common language running from the kids' furniture to the rest of the house
the furniture can grow with the kids into early adulthood
adults without kids who just like a joyful splash of color are also covered." |
